Avondale Arizona
Avondale, previously known as Aqua Fria (Spanish for Cold water) was founded by William “Billy” G. Moore in the late 1860’s. Moore bought land, established a stage stop, built a general store and saloon and was Postmaster of Coldwater from 1901 to 1905.
Billy Moore was reportedly a renegade who supposedly rode with the Civil War’s Quantrill Gang. He became the largest land owner after buying 280 acres for 70 silver dollars. His Coldwater Station was a favorite watering hole for passing stagecoach drivers crossing the desert on their way to California.
The Post Office later moved to Avondale ranch and the name Coldwater was discontinued when, in 1946, the city was incorporated.
With a population of 60,000 residents, the surrounding communities celebrate its past with a parade down Western Avenue, a carnival, burro races, golf tournaments and many other events. It is considered to be one of the fastest growing communities in the county.
