Black Canyon City Arizona
Jack Swilling, Indian fighter, miner, rancher, farmer, developer and known “hell raiser” was instrumental in developing this area. His discovery of the abandoned canals and irrigation ditches left behind by the Hohokam Indians was revitalized when he founded the Swilling Irrigation Canal Company.
Black Canyon City once known as Goddard was a stage stop on the Phoenix to Prescott line and a Military stopover during the Territorial days. The stage line which began in 1872 continued on until 1917. Black Canyon Hill was a one-way stage line and drivers had to announce their presence by a blowing of horns.
Although called a city, Black Canyon has never been incorporated. With a population of 4,000 residents, this community enjoys smog-free sunny weather throughout the year.
