Chandler Arizona
In 1887, thinking it was hopeless to carve a living out of this drought-plagued desert, veterinarian Dr. Alexander John Chandler decided it was time to leave the area. A sudden terrible storm the night of his intended departure washed out the railroad tracks and Chandler was forced to stay for a few more days. Seeing the desert blossom after these rains, he decided to stay and the town of Chandler was born.
His decision to stay allowed him to become one of the largest landowners, owning nearly 18,000 acres and forming the Chandler Ranch in the early 1890’s. He later became a local expert in irrigation while the Roosevelt Dam was being built and sub-divided his vast landholdings into plots of 10 to 160 acre parcels. These sold quickly and the town of Chandler was establish and finally incorporated in February of 1920.
