Chino Valley Arizona
6,750 residents call Chino Valley home today. Lt. Amiel W. Whipple noticed what the Mexicans called “de china”, a curly variety of grass in 1854. The name of Val de Chino or Chino was coined. Later it was to be known as Big Chino Valley and archives indicate that the Chino Valley was the first site of Fort Whipple.
Some must see attractions when visiting the area includes the Sharlot Hall Museum, the Smoki Museum, and a favorite gaming spot, Bucky’s Casino. For the outdoor enthusiasts, there are hiking trails at Granite Mountain although he Thumb Butte Trail is reputed to be the best. Be sure to catch the “Music ‘n More Festival in May, the fireworks on Independence Day and the First Territorial Capital Days in September.
