Congress Arizona
Originally called the Congress mine in 1883, and still sometimes referred to as Old Congress, and then Congress Junction, this town received its current name of Congress in Nov 1, 1938. The mine closed down in 1938 along with the post office and the town changed its name from Congress Junction to Congress.
In 1884 gold was discovered near where the town is today by Dennis May. Congress grew to a town with amenities such as a school, hospital and telegraph. Being a desert town, it had its difficulties in getting water and a fire destroyed much of the town in both 1898 and 1900.
With a population of 1,717 residents (2000 census), Congress is an unincorporated town with its roots in the mining industry. Today it is a cattle and cattle shipping center.
