Cottonwood Arizona
Beginning a small farming town, Cottonwood was located in a grove of sixteen grand old cottonwoods. Malaria and dysentery presented severe problems as mosquitoes rose in thick clouds from stagnant pools left over by receding floods when settlers first moved into the area.
Today, with a population of 5,900, Cottonwood is a pleasant, quiet community offering a rich agricultural, livestock and mining district along with a quaint Historic Old Town area.
Visitors enjoy traveling the railroad lines viewing scenic spots and wildlife on the Verde Canyon Railroad. A popular attraction, the Tuzigoot National Monument, an old Indian dwelling, give visitors a close up view of the culture from long ago. To see working model trains and to learn more of the areas past, be sure to visit the Clemenceau Heritage Museum.
Hiking, picnicking, fishing and horseback riding through the Sycamore Canyon Wilderness offers a breathtaking view to its visitors. Also near to town is the Dead Horse Ranch State Park.
Activities throughout the year include the Old Timers Fiddlers’ Association Campout and Steak Fry, the Annual Gem and Mineral Show, the Verde Mingus Blow-out 10k run, the Annual Antique Auto, Cycle and Aeroplane Show, the Verde Valley Fair and of course the Fourth of July celebrations.
