Flagstaff Arizona
Flagstaff is the largest city in Northern Arizona and is located at the intersection of Interstate 17 and Interstate 40. Being the second largest in the 48 contiguous states, it is also the regional center and county seat for Coconino County. One of the highest U.S. cities with an elevation of 7,000 feet, it is nestled at the base of San Francisco Peaks and surrounded by one of the biggest pines forest on the planet.
The name “flagstaff” came from a very tall pine tree which was made into a flagpole back in 1876 which was used for the centennial Declaration of Independence celebration. With an area of 64 miles, Flagstaff was founded in 1881 and incorporated as a town in 1894 and as a city in 1928. Being a transportation hub located along an old wagon road to California, the town was founded in conjunction with the arrival of the railroad.
Flagstaff currently is a governmental, educational, transportation, cultural and commercial center. The government and tourism are the major sources of employment. In addition, the Northern Arizona University has a major economic impact as well.
The city of Flagstaff has a population of 61,270 as of U.S. Census 2004.
