Fort Defiance Arizona
Fort Defiance is located in Apache County, Arizona. It is situated on the southeast corner of Navajo reservation that covers part of Arizona, New Mexico and Utah. John Collier who was the Commissioner for Indian Affairs in the early 1930s declared that the center of administration for the Navajo Tribe should be Tseghahodzani, which was also known as “the rock with a hole in it.” Established in 1851, Fort Defiance was created as a military outpost in Dine bikeyah (Navajo territory) by Colonel Edwin Sumner. It also became Colonel Kit Carson’s headquarters for his 1863 Navajo Campaign.
Presently, the area of Fort Defiance is considered as a commercial and administrative growth center of the Navajo Nation. One of Navajo Nation’s seven industrial parks is located in Fort Defiance.
Fort Defiance has a population of 4,061 as of U.S. Census 2000.
