Fort Mojave Arizona
Fort Mojave is located in Arizona, California and Nevada along the Colorado River. It was first established as Camp Colorado in April 19, 1859 by Major L.A. Armstead. The purpose of the establishment of the fort was to provide shelter to emigrants to California and a base of operations against the Mojave Indians. On April 28, 1859, Camp Colorado was then renamed as Fort Mojave. Then on May 28, 1861, the fort was abandoned for fear of Confederate Forces in the area by Brig. Gen. Edwin Sumner. It was re-established as a garrison in 1863 to cultivate friendly relations with the Indians and to protect those traveling along Mojave and Prescott road.
Fort Mojave has a hot and arid climate with a frost-free growing season of 255 days, 99 percent sunshine at an elevation of 480 to 550 feet. It was once dependent on the US government for federal and state programs but its activities in agriculture, retail sales and resource development is now increasing. Presently, the fort is now part of the Fort Mojave Indian Reservation with a population of 796 as of U.S. Census 2002
