Fort Thomas Arizona

Fort Thomas was established in the summer of 1876. It was originally located six miles of Camp Goodwin on the north side of the US Highway 70 then moved in 1878 to the present-day town of Fort Thomas, which is about one mile west of US highway 70. The area was originally designated as a camp and then renamed as a fort in 1882. That same year, it became the headquarters for the 3rd US Cavalry. Fort Thomas was an active military post but after 1886, right up until the final surrender of “Geronimo,” the forts’ usefulness was over and it was abandoned in spring of 1891. Fort Thomas was named after an Adjutant General of the Army who died in 1875 whose name was General Lorenzo Thomas.
