Fredonia Arizona
Fredonia is located on the east side of Kanab Creek around four miles of the Utah-Arizona border in the Arizona strip. Kanab Creek is Arizona’s northern-most town and the Arizona Strip is a portion of Arizona north of the Colorado River in the middle of the Grand Canyon and Utah. The Canyon, which effectively cut-off the strip from the rest of state made the area remain relatively unspoiled by urbanization. Mormon settlers founded the community in 1865. They were from Utah seeking freedom from laws against polygamy. The name was derived from “free” and “donia,” which was a Spanish word for woman who was given by the Mormon Apostle Erastus Snow.
Fredonia has an elevation of 4,800 feet and a population of 1,105 based on the U.S. Census 2004. Today, the economy of Fredonia is based primarily on tourism and agriculture.
