Guadalupe Arizona
Guadalupe is located at the base of South Mountain in between Phoenix and Tempe. It is a town situated in Maricopa County, Arizona mostly composed of Yaqui Indians and Mexicans. It is also known as “Little Mexico” in the “Valley of the Sun.” It is surrounded by man-made boundaries, to the west is I-10 and Phoenix, to the north and south is Tempe and to the east is Salt River Project’s Highline Canal.
Guadalupe which was founded in 1904, by the Yaqui Indians, was named after the Virgin of Guadalupe which was the patron saint of Mexico. During the turn of the century, these Yaqui Indians fled their homeland in Sonora to avoid enslavement and persecution under the Mexican Government led by Porforio Diaz. A lot of the Yaqui Indians established villages in Arizona. Many Mexicans also settled in Guadalupe over the years.
Guadalupe with an elevation of 1,248 feet was incorporated in the year 1975. It has a total population of 5,380 as of 2004 U.S. Census. It is predominantly residential with retail and small businesses that caters to both locals and tourists. It is a community that offers many facilities like a community center, a library, four ballparks, a recreation center, a senior center and a park.
