Hope Arizona
Hope is located in the McMullen Valley at the junction of U.S. Highway 60 and State Highway 70 in La Paz County, southern Arizona. The town offers beautiful desert views and a nice warm climate. It sits at an elevation of 1,380 feet with a summer high of 105 degrees and a winter low of 40 degrees.
The Arizona Gazette in 1909 noted that a town had sprung into existence at this location and it was named Johannesburg though it was short-lived. When the main highway changed it route from Vicksburg to bypass the location of old Johannesburg in 1920, many merchants moved from Vicksburg to this new location and named it “Hope.” It was named as such to reflect their wishes of renewed business in the area.
Today, Hope is a small desert community with a beautiful open desert country and spectacular mountain views. It has one RV park, a single gas station and antique store. One would often wonder what these people are doing in the area in the middle of nowhere. The secret was simple; the RV Park was always full of happy campers, rockhounders and off-road enthusiasts.
