Huachuca City Arizona
Huachuca City, which is also known as the “Sunset City,” is located on the southeast corner of Arizona, in Cochise County. It is situated on Stare Highway 90 which is 64 miles southeast of Tucson. The area originally started as a stop on the presently abandoned Southern Pacific Railroad which is located in between Tombstone and Patagonia. The Apaches once dominated the rugged mountains and broad grassy valleys. The chief of the Apaches gave his name to the county. Numerous sites throughout the county reflected the struggles between the Chiricahua Apaches and the U.S. Cavalry.
At present, Huachuca City at an elevation of 4,345 feet has a population of 1,830 as of 2004 U.S. Census. It is now noted for its historical, recreational and scenic features. The Coronado National Forest and the Chiricahua Mountains are popular to hunters and nature lovers. Its economy is closely tied to the U.S. Army’s Fort Huachuca which is the headquarters for the Army’s Information Systems Command, Intelligence Center and School, Electronic Proving Ground and Communications Electronic Installation Agency. The community also offers a range of facilities such as a library, a community center, four parks and the Huachuca Recreation Area which offers many kinds of outdoor activities.
