Lake Powell Arizona
Page is a planned community situated on the southern shores of the magnificent Lake Powell. It is located near the Arizona and Utah border. It was founded in 1957 wherein the city was planned and developed for the workers building Glen Canyon Dam. The name was taken from John C. Page who was the commissioner of the Bureau of Reclamation in the 1930’s.
In the beginning, the camp was established as a temporary settlement for the construction workers of the Glen Canyon Dam. The area only has a few streets carved out of the sandy rocky slopes and consisted of temporary homes and house trailers. Permanent homes were gradually constructed and a church was built along the Lake Powell Boulevard. Building sites were granted to twelve different religious denominations in Lake Powell Boulevard which local residents now refer to as “Church Row.”
Lake Powell was named after John Wesley Powell. He was a one-armed explorer and a Civil War veteran that led a colorful life. In 1869, Powell led nine companions on the very first scientific expedition in the Colorado River. His remarkable journey covered around a thousand miles through the uncharted canyons and wild rapids of the Colorado River. This expedition and another one in 1871 produced the initial maps of the region and changed the future of the American West.
Today, Page being situated atop Mason Mesa that overlooks Wahweap Bay of Lake Powell is now a major resort area. It has a population of 7,090 as of 2004 U.S. Census. It sits at an elevation of 4,300 feet. Lake Powell is the center recreational opportunities in the town with 1,960 miles of shoreline which is longer than the entire west coast of the continental U.S.
