Mammoth Arizona

The town of Mammoth which was founded in 1887 is in the San Pedro River Valley. It is located southeast of Pinal County, Arizona. Oracle and San Manuel are two other communities located within 10 miles of Mammoth make up the tri-community area. The first mine in the Mammoth district was located by Frank Shultz in the year 1883. A stamp mill which was named Mammoth was built on the San Pedro River since it was not possible to work the ores at the site. Mammoth Mine changed hands in 1895 and work came to a halt while a new system of milling was introduced. Except for a brief period during the Depression, it was the beginning of the last gold mining revival in Arizona. Only when molybdenum production began in 1936 did Mammoth enjoyed renewed importance.

Mammoth, at an elevation of 2,350 feet, has a total population of 1,750 based on the 2004 U.S. Census. The primary economic activities at the town are retail trade, transportation and warehousing, accommodation and food services. It also offers many scenic attractions of the Sonoran Desert of Southern Arizona.
