Meadview Arizona
The area of Meadview was purchased for land development in 1960. The area includes South Cove, Pearce Ferry and Grand Wash. The town started out as retirement community in 1960. It was later determined that portions of that land was inside the Lake Mead National Recreation. That land was exchanged for inland parcels. It sits at an elevation between 3,100 and 3,500 feet. It is located 10 miles south of Lake Mead in between Kingman, Arizona and Las Vegas Nevada. The Ute Trail which was used by Indians crossing the Colorado River for centuries is located in Grapevine Wash east of Meadview. To reach Hopi, this trail continued to the south of Grapevine Wash with one branch continuing to the west at Cottonwood and the east branch crossing Hualapai land.
Harrison Pearce was sent by the LDS church in 1860 to run a ferry across the Colorado at the Ute Trail crossing. He was serving his penance for his participation in the Mountain Meadows Massacre in the year 1857. It was then named Pearce Ferry and became a boat ramp and the preferred landing for all rafts trips through the Grand Canyon. Other ferry crossings were also set-up in the area in the coming years. In 1935, all of the ferry crossings were covered by the waters of Lake Mead after the lake was formed due to the newly constructed Boulder Dam which is now known as Hoover Dam. In 1966, South Cove boat ramp which is located 60 miles above Hoover Dam was built.
The present Meadview now has around 800 homes and an estimated population of 1,500. It offers scenic attractions such as the sloth cave and bat cave.
