Miami Arizona
Miami is town located in Gila County, Arizona. Black Jack Newman founded Miami as a camp near his copper mine in 1909. He named it Mima after his fiancée, Mima Tune though the name was distorted and became more common as Miami. The town was incorporated in the year 1918.
Today, Miami has a population of 1,960 as 2004 U.S. Census. Miami, together with its neighboring town, Globe, have been important copper mining centers for more than a century. These two communities are about 4 miles apart in east-central Arizona and have had a friendly rivalry that has made life interesting for both. The continued mining operations in Miami have supported real growth in the area including that of Globe whose mines closed down in the 1930’s. Globe’s existence today is mostly because of the Miami mines.
