Oro Valley Arizona
Oro Valley is a suburban town located about 6 miles of north of Tucson, in Pima County, Arizona. The community name was derived from the Spanish word “oro” which means gold. It is situated in the western foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains at the base of Pusch Ridge. The Tortolita Mountains can be seen from north of the town. The valley was formed by the Santa Cruz River joining the Gold Creek. It covers an area nearly 32 square miles.
Sitting at an elevation of 2,600 feet, Oro Valley has an approximate population of 39,335 based on the 2005 census. Today, it is the fifth fastest-growing place among all cities and towns in Arizona regardless of size. The area boasts of pine-covered mountains called La Iglesia (Spanish word meaning church) by the early Spaniards for their cathedral-like appearance. It also offers a broad range of cultural and community facilities that includes an Olympic-sized swimming pool, racquetball courts and Little League fields.
