Picacho Arizona
Picacho is a small town situated in the lower Santa Cruz River Valley in Pinal County, south-central Arizona. The name Picacho was derived from the Spanish word that means “peak.” This peak was an important place for travelers in the area. Aside from its location which is halfway between Tucson and the Gila River, it was also a source of water. The only Civil War battle in Arizona occurred in this area in the year 1862. The battle took place when the troops from the Union’s California Volunteers encountered a detachment of soldiers on guard duty from the Confederacy’s Texas Volunteers. Picacho was founded in 1888 and sometimes referred to as the Great Pocatcho.
