Red Rock Arizona
The town of Red Rock is located in Pinal County, southern Arizona. It is in the lower Santa Cruz River Valley, along Interstate 10 between Phoenix and Tucson. Tucson is about 50 miles south of Red Rock.
Red Rock was founded in 1887 and the name was taken for the red butte located near the town. The construction of the rail line made Red Rock a booming town. In the year 1860, prior to the establishment of the town, the Silverbell Mine had already begun its mining operations in the northeastern part of Red Rock and Sasco smelter was also built just outside of the town. Silverbell Mine went bankrupt in 1911 after a shaft fire at the mine. Then in 1915, another took over the company and continued its operations up until 1921. The year 1934 signaled the end of the mining era, Sasco smelter closed down and the tracks of the rail line in the middle of Red Rock and Silverbell were dismantled.
Today, the town of Red Rock continues. At an elevation of 1,864 feet, much of the town’s economy is based in agriculture and ranching.
