San Luis Arizona
San Luis is situated in Yuma County on the southwestern corner of Arizona which is immediately adjacent to both Mexico and California. Together with the opening of the U.S. Port of Entry, the town of San Luis was established in 1930. The area experienced tremendous population and commercial growth which makes the town one of the fastest growing communities in the Yuma County after its incorporation in 1979. San Luis has a sister city across the border which is San Luis Rio Colorado in Sonora, Mexico.
The city of San Luis which just about 100 feet above sea level has a population of 21,180 based on the U.S. Census 2004. A large portion of its economy is comprised of retail trade, agriculture and manufacturing. The light industry located on both sides of the US/Mexico border is another significant segment. Visitor attractions in the area include the old Territorial Prison, Fort Yuma and the 16th century Fort Thomas Mission. It presently offers many community facilities such as recreational areas, a community center, a senior center, parks, a library and sports activity areas.
