Show Low Arizona

The city of Show Low is located 175 miles northeast of Phoenix and 195 miles north of Tucson in the southern Navajo County, Arizona. At an elevation of 6,400 feet, the city was founded in 1870 and incorporated in 1953.

Show Low was named by a turn of the card in a game of cards played by C.E. Cooley and Marion Clark. These men were deciding there was not enough room for both of them in the same settlement and both agreed to let a game of cards decide who will move. According to the story, Clark said, “If you can show low, you win,” and as Cooley turned the card, Cooley won and said “Show low it is.” Thus, the city was named Show Low.

The present city of Show Low has a population of 9,365 as of 2004 U.S. Census. The major foundation of the city’s economy is tourism and recreation. It also serves as a regional trade and services center for southern Navajo County and some areas of southern Apache County as well.
