Somerton Arizona
The location of the city of Somerton is about 12 miles south of Yuma and 180 miles east of San Diego in the fertile Yuma Valley in southwestern Yuma County, Arizona. It is in the middle of California and Mexican borders. It was established in 1898 and incorporated as city in 1918. The name “Somerton” was taken from another community in Indiana at the suggestion of Captain A.D. Yokum.
Somerton was once on land that was claimed for fraudulent land grant, the Rancho El Paso de los Algondones Grant.
