Superior Arizona
The town of Superior is located in Pinal County, Arizona. It is on the U.S. 60 junction of State Highway 77. The area has a mountainous setting and surrounded by peaks such as the Iron Mountain. It was founded in 1882 and was first named Hastings in 1900 when George Lobb Sr., who was native of England, laid out the town. Then in 1902, it was renamed as Superior which was taken from Lake Superior and Arizona Mining Company (LS&A) who bought Lobb’s Golden Eagle Group. This mine fed the economy of the area.
The Silver Queen Mine, ran by the Magma Copper Company which was established in 1910, became a great copper producer until its silver ran out. In 1924, a smelter was built in the area and remained operational for 47 years.
Today, Superior has a population of 3,195 as of 2004 U.S. Census. Mining is still the one of the community’s major economic source followed by trade and service industry. It is rich in historical landmarks and many Hollywood producers considered the area a cinematic treasure.
