Tolleson Arizona

Tolleson is an independent community located 12 miles west of downtown Phoenix. It has an elevation of 926 feet. The town was founded in 1912 by W.G. Tolleson of South Carolina. It was said that it was founded on the site of an old railroad station called the Ten-Mile Store. W.G. Tolleson had chartered a railroad train one day and brought in potential buyers from Phoenix. Town lots were sold at $50 per lot and a rebate of $5 worth of gold piece to those who signed the contracts. About 80 lots were sold at that time. Tolleson has a land area of about 6 square miles. It was later incorporated in 1929.

Tolleson was once dependent on agriculture but has later diversified its economic base which includes retail, manufacturing and several food packing plants. It also became a strong distribution point of companies wanting to deliver goods to the southwestern areas. This was due to its excellent location south of I-10 and the interchange with the loop 101 which was completed in 2000.

Population as of year 2000 census is 4,974.
