The town of Wellton is located 29 miles east of Yuma, Arizona. It is in the heart of Wellton-Mohawk Valley surrounded by the Gila Mountains and local farms. It was founded in 1878 and incorporated in 1970. It has an elevation of 256 feet. The population is 1,860 as of 2001 census.
Wellton (formerly Well Town) was named during the times water wells were being drilled for the water requirements to service the Southern Pacific Railroad. For the people in the Wellton-Mohawk Valley and its surrounding areas, the town serves as a business, recreation and service center. Agriculture and ranching have traditionally formed the town’s economic bases but a large portion of the population was involved in the agricultural support industries, trades and other services. Also impacting the economy significantly is the rapidly growing clear winter population and retirees.
