Winslow Arizona

Winslow is a city located in Navajo County, Arizona. It is just 100 miles east of Grand Canyon and 50 miles east of Flagstaff with an elevation of 4,850 feet. The spectacular views of the Painted Desert and San Francisco Peaks made this city a favorite travel destination. It was reputed that the first settler in the area back in 1880 had been a hotel man who lived in and did business inside a tent. A U.S. Postal Office was established two years later, in January 1882. The town was then named after Edward Winslow, who was a railroad company president. It was incorporated in 1900.

Winslow was made famous by the song titled “Take it Easy” sung by the Eagles. When Route 66 was supplanted by Interstate 40, the area almost suffered an economic lost but the popularity of the song led to a commercial revival and a renewed attention for Winslow. The town now has billboard on Interstate 40 with the words: “Winslow, Arizona says ‘Take it Easy’”.

It has a population of 9,520 at the 2000 census.
