Wittman Arizona
Wittman is a small unincorporated community in Maricopa County, around 35 miles northwest of Central Phoenix along US Highway 60 in the central part of Arizona. It is technically located within Phoenix’s boundaries but locals considered it outside of the city. The community was named after an investor who financed the rebuilding of Walnut Grove dam.
Wittman does not have any official designated boundaries and much of the population who resides in the community would not readily identify themselves as living in the town. Efforts in the past to incorporate the community failed largely because much of the local landowners had opposed it and because of it there hasn’t been any real local or planning agency for the area. Much of the area near and around the town had been annexed by the city of Surprise in recent years. It has been included as part of Surprise City’s general plan which effectively removed any chance for the town to be incorporated in the future. Wittman will lose its identity completely once the town is annexed by the city of Surprise.
Accordingly, the town has a population of 4,174 according to 2000 U.S. census.
