Yarnell Arizona
Yarnell is located in Yavapai County, about 80 miles northwest of Phoenix on U.S. Highway 89. Both the hill and community were named after Harrison Yarnell who discovered the Yarnell Mine back in the 1890’s. It is an unincorporated town founded in 1892 wherein the Yarnell family was among the earliest to settle in the region. After the first post-office was discontinued, it was re-established in the year 1928 and given a new name called “Peeples Valley.” The name was derived from Abraham Peeples who had a ranch in the valley that bears his name at an earlier year which was 1865. But since the people in the area still locally referred to the area as Yarnell, it was changed back to Yarnell.
Yarnell has an elevation 4,892 feet and at the 2000 census, a population of 645. The Prescott National Forest and the Shrine of St. Joseph of the Mountains are just a few of the scenic attractions of the area.
