Young Arizona
Young is located in the Gila County, in the eastern mountains of Arizona with an elevation of 5,200 feet just below the Mogollan Rim. The town is served by two roads, namely: Forest Road 512 from the north and Highway 288 from the south. Both roads are mountainous and have steep grades and curves. It is totally surrounded by the Tonto National Forest.
According to some people, the community was named either from Ola Young, the first postmistress or her father William Young who was a cattleman but it was formerly named as Pleasant Valley. The area began as a cattle-ranching community back in the 1800’s. It was the site of the brutal feud between two families, the Grahams and the Tewkburys which was recorded between 1887 and 1892.
A lot of the areas in Young offer scenic views of the mountains that surround the valley and there are miles of trails to explore either on foot or on horseback. Presently, the area has a population of 561 as of 2000 census. But much of the populations are retirees.
